Second Quarter 2020 Performance Round-Up

Each quarter we pull together the published results of three leading measures of foundation performance, the FoundationMark GIV Index, the Northern Trust Foundation and Endowment Universe, and the foundation subgroup of the BNY Mellon U.S. Master Trust Universe. The results are shown in the table and graph below.

FoundationMark Grantmaker Investment Value Index (“GIV”) (here)

The FoundationMark Grantmaker Investment Valuation Index (“GIV”) tracks the investment performance of private foundations. Using data drawn from over 40,000 foundations, the GIV Index is the most comprehensive measure of foundation performance available.

Northern Trust Universe (here)

The Northern Trust Universe tracks the performance of more than 320 large U.S. institutional investment plans, with a combined asset value of more than $1 trillion, which subscribe to performance measurement services as part of Northern Trust’s asset servicing offerings.

BNY Mellon U.S. Master Trust Universe (here)

The BNY Mellon U.S. Master Trust Universe offers peer comparisons of performance by plan type and size. It consists of 498 corporate, foundation, endowment, public, Taft-Hartley, and health care plans with a total market value of more than $2.1 trillion and an average plan size of over $6.8 billion.

NACUBO – TIAA Study of Endowments (here)

The 2020 NACUBO-TIAA Study of Endowments® (NTSE) is the preeminent analysis of the financial, investment, and governance policies and practices of the nation’s higher education endowments and affiliated foundations. This year’s study reflects the responses of 705 institutions representing $637.7 billion in endowment assets and covers the fiscal year July 1, 2019–June 30, 2020
